CARBO Juan Carlos (Colombia)
Update, March 2012.
Just recently (March 2012) I received a letter and information on the sports career of a good friend, Mr. Juan Carlos Carbo Abello of Colombia. It's an impressive resume and it's my honor to show it to you all on this website. Please find details below:
Hello Gerrit,
I am getting ready for my trip to Chula Vista, CA this coming weekend and I thought I will send you my BMX resume for you to look at.
Besides what is written in my short biography there, I will like to tell you that I was also a Founder, Secretary and later President of the Confederacion Americana de BMX CAB. My efforts concluded with the appointment of Colombia to host the 1995 UCI BMX World Championships, and the change of the Cruiser classes that were before 25-39 and went to split to the still current 25-29, 30-34 and 35-39, and the addition of the 45 and over.
When I moved to the United States back in 2002 I kept on racing until I got a shoulder injury in 2006 that kept me out of racing for a while. In 2009, currently living in the state of Washington, I decided to come back to race and I have been the # 1 State Plate Winner for 3 years in a row in the Cruiser 46-50 class. Actually, I am working my way up to make it 4 years in a row. Tough challenge.
It is a great satisfaction to me to see that the sport I introduced into my country back in 1976 have bring great Colombian riders into the World racing scene like the awesome Mario Andres Soto (RIP) and the now super fast Elite Women Mariana Pajon.
Just wanted to bring that information and my resume to you since you run the University of BMX and I consider it important for that information to be out there for everybody to see. Sometimes it is a shame to think that a sport starts evolving and the new organizers and riders most of the time forget or never get to know of the origins of it in their own countries, and don't recognize the efforts of the early pioneers. My BMX story and that of my country is no different, and that makes me sad.
Well, I hope everything is okay with you and your family and that hopefully I will see you again soon.
Thanks,
Juan Carlos Carbó Abello
* Note by Gerrit Does: Juan Carlos, I can't agree with you more on what you are stating in your letter in the end (text in blue) and YES, the University of BMX tries to show the respect that pioneers in any field in BMX deserve. Thank you!
And how true can you be Juan Carlos .... at the 30th Olympic Games in London, your Colombian Mariana Pajon did win the Gold medal in Elite Women class. She is you new Olympic Champion and it's because people like YOU, who started BMX in your country, that she could now win this title, CONGRATULATIONS!
JUAN CARLOS CARBO ABELLO
